The Worlds Greatest Classic Car Show

March 21 - 25 2012

Essen, Germany

2011 Event - 178,300 visitors from 41 countries! 1200 exhibitors from 28 countries! Over 110,000 square metres of exhibition floor space in 17 halls! Approximately 2500 automobiles for sale! Over 130 presentations from clubs and museums!

The most renowned German and international vintage car restoration companies are represented at TECHNO-CLASSICA, together with the restoration departments of the automobile manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and BMW. For the first time, also Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles offers restorations ex-works and presents this at the factory exhibition stand in hall 7 on the occasion of a show restoration. Whether bodywork or repair of engines, interior trim or paintwork - the specialists for the restoration of classic automobiles demonstrate the combination of traditional craftsmanship and state-of-the-art technology required for a perfect and historically exact restoration. Illustrative objects are also found with other exhibitors and clubs; the barnfinds demonstrate what can be achieved after successful restoration.

Jointly with S.I.H.A., the German Federation for Motor Trades and Repairs (ZDK) hosts the first Vintage Car Convention on 21st March, the Preview, Trade and Press day. Four topics are in the focus of the event with a duration of 4 1/2 hours. The issue of "Restoration Ethics" deals with the important part for the conservation of the original substance. New approaches for restoration were developed in the past years with the objective to maintain the original substance of the vehicles as far as possible. Today, vehicle restorers often face the problem to reconcile the demands of the customers with the new restoration ethics.

Training and further education continuously grows in importance for the companies specialising in vintage cars and young classic cars. Since 2009, the ZDK certifies vintage car shops as "Specialised Workshops for Historic Vehicles" and offers the additional vocational qualification "Vintage and young classic car technology" to prevent the loss of special knowledge and keep the experimental knowledge alive. The main focus "Experts with vintage car skills" deals with the topics of "Avoiding technical problems - identifying dazzlers", "H (Historic) number plates: which modifications are approvable" and "Retrofitting: legal, illegal … regardless". Finally, on the occasion of a panel discussion, the referees are looking for answers to the question "Vintage car today… and how about tomorrow?" The Vintage Car Convention is aimed both at restorers and manufacturers, dealers, clubs, museums and of course at owners of vintage cars.
Arranged for the 10th time, the TECHNO-CLASSICA ACADEMY now is a traditional event already. The educational initiative under the auspices of the ZDK is again organised by the Schweinfurt Vehicle Academy. In live demonstrations with five objects to be restored, professionals impressively show, amongst other things, wheelwright and upholstery work, door sill repairs, tin-coating of body components, autogenous gas welding and working with a wheeling machine. The repair of the driver's cab of an Unimog 411 of the year 1964 will certainly be a highlight of the on-site demonstrations.
